Landing at Heathrow on a Saturday afternoon for business on Monday. I rented a Vauxhall Astra with a stick. Where is an interesting place to stay not too far from London, but has good restaurants/sites that I could check out Sat night/Sun Morning and will be a nice drive getting there?

Did you book an Astra or Astra/or similar? And be careful if you booked through Sixt, they seem to have a habit of downgrading.

I booked through my business account with Enterprise. I’ll get upgraded before downgraded.

From Heathrow? I’d probably hit Bath (full day) and stop at Stonehenge along the way. Extend that trip into the surrounding Cotswolds for some amazing scenery and great drives. But if you want to stay closer to London, you could do Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace in a day. All of these things are awesome. I'm going from memory on the locations and roads here, but that makes sense in my head.

See if something is going on at Brands Hatch?

That's only a bragging right in France.

I’d second Bath. I went to university there and it’s pretty cool :)

I’d also recommend Brighton. It’s about an hour from the south of London (maybe hour and a half from Heathrow) and it’s a really funky place with lots of cool restaurants. Drive’s not so great though as it’s all motorways. The A303 to Bath past Stonehenge would be better.

Actually, here’s a plan.

Saturday

1. Land at Heathrow. Book a hotel in Brighton. Pick up hire car and drive there

2. Rock up at Brighton and park in any old carpark (they’re all expensive in Brighton but you don’t have much choice)

3. Wander around the Lanes in Brighton (cool little alleyway shops)

4. Walk along the seafront and get some seafood/fish and chips on the beach

5. Stop off for an ale in the Fortune of War (a cool pub that’s like a ship in the sea wall)

6. Book into a comedy show at Komedia (will be dirt cheap and great)

7. If you fancy it find any old pub/bar and have a couple more drinks :)

8. Head to the hotel and crash

Sunday

1. Wake up and drive to Beachy Head near Eastbourne and have a wander along the cliffs to clear your head (they’re the highest chalk cliffs in Britain). Lots of nice coastal roads there too.

2. Head for a proper English Sunday roast at the pub on Beachy Head

3. Head back to wherever your works meeting is for the afternoon :)

Bath is a good shout, as is Brighton. Salisbury is also an option, I suppose.

If you go to Bath or Salisbury then it makes it easy to check out Stonehenge (or Thruxton, if they’ve got anything on that weekend) on the way back along the A303, then take the B3051 over to the M4 and you get a fun road that’ll take you over the area that’s apparently the inspiration for Watership Down - if the weather’s nice there’s some nice views with a little lay-by and a footpath along the top of the hill. Won’t cost you any time either if those fucking ‘smart motorway’ bullshit roadworks are still on the M3.
